Why Should I Drink Water After a Massage?

June 17, 2019

Massage is a wonderful therapeutic method of addressing trigger points that relieve pain and muscle tension. It also can removal excess fluids from your body’s tissues. Other massages are strictly for relaxation and stress relief.

Here are some of the different kinds of massages available and there descriptions:

Deep Tissue Massage

Hot Stone Massage

Lymphatic Massage

Neuromuscular Massage

Sports Massage

Swedish Massage

Trigger Point Therapy

Water Recommended

After a massage, massage therapists highly recommend to drink water for many reasons:

Release Toxins

After a massage treatment drinking water helps the kidneys and other organs process the various substances which move through the body on a regular basis which releases and flushes out a lot of toxins.

Dehydration

Nutrients and oxygen are being delivered to your muscles at a faster rate during a massage, and this all uses water from your blood stream, which may give you a feeling of dehydration, or thirst. Obviously drinking water after your massage can help reduce dehydration.

Reduces Soreness

To reduce soreness after a massage, drink plenty of water. By increasing your water intake after your appointment you will boost your odds for not being sore the next day. Drinking water helps move out waste products that the therapist worked out of your muscles into circulation.

Drain Lactic Acid

Massage can break up lactic acid or trigger points in your body which needs to get flushed out. Drinking water can help move out the lactic acid (waste products) which is worked out of your muscles. Lactic acid buildup around muscles can trigger cramps and lead to pain, sore muscles.

Epsom Salts

If you are already dehydrated, remember to use moderation with Epsom salts in your bath after a massage. Prolonged use with Epsom salts can further dehydrate your body.
