What is a Neuromuscular Massage?

May 2, 2019

Neuromuscular massage is a type of massage that is therapeutic and addresses trigger points that relieve muscle tension and pain. Neuromuscular massage therapy is also called trigger point myotherapy.

Five elements that can cause pain are:

  1. Ischemia (lack of blood flow)
  2. Trigger points
  3. Nerve compression
  4. Postural distortion
  5. Biomechanical (movement) dysfunction

Neuromuscular therapy can relieve or reduce these pain areas and is especially helpful for lower back pain management caused by soft tissue injury.

Massage Therapist

During your first session with your massage therapist, he or she will interview you about your:

  • health history
  • current physical condition
  • lifestyle
  • stress levels

The massage therapist will devise a treatment plan that addresses your pain syndromes. With neuromuscular therapy, the massage therapist works with soft tissue to treat back pain caused by muscle strain.

Technique

Neuromuscular therapy consists of strong pressure on the areas of muscle spasm. The massage therapist applies concentrated pressure with the fingers, knuckles, or elbow on areas of pain until they reach a trigger point, usually a spot that’s extra tender or numb. Your therapist begins a stronger, more localized massage to the trigger point to relax the muscle which will release lactic acid. When you release lactic acid it increases blood and oxygen flow, which, in turn, enhances the function of joints, muscles, and movement.

Neuromuscular therapy will feel painful at first, but the pressure of the massage should alleviate the muscle spasm. Throughout the massage, it is essential to communicate with the massage therapist regarding the pressure – whether the pressure is too much, too little, getting better, getting worse. The therapist should listen and respond accordingly. The massage pressure should never be overly painful. The pressure should be a “good pain”.

Neuromuscular massage therapy is a form of soft tissue manipulation that specifically treats underlying causes of chronic pain involving the nervous and muscular systems.

People who make massage therapy a part of their regular routines find that it improves their overall health and well-being. With regular massage, you may feel more relaxed, centered, and rejuvenated.
